Welcome to the 2009
The Rockville Rays, a summer competitive swimming program
offered by the City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks, is
celebrating its 26th season in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). We will once again be competing in the A
division. Christine Chuang, veteran of the Rockville Rays,
will be heading up our coaching staff this year. Weili Gu and Bing Sun will be serving as our team representatives,
and Matt Truong will be serving as our A team representative
while Marianne Beattie, Veronica
Espinoza and Tapas Saha will be
taking on the B team duties.
Our program consists of a series of dual meets divided into two levels of competition - the faster ‘A’ meets are limited in the number of competitors per team; the ‘B’ meets are open to any swimmer not competing in the ‘A’ meets. We have a full season of Saturday ‘A’ meets and Wednesday night ‘B’ meets, so all of our swimmers will have an opportunity to compete in at least one meet each week. The attached 2009 season calendar provides important dates you won’t want to miss: time trials, A & B meets, the A & B relay carnivals, and the A Divisional Championship. In addition, swimmers or teams with qualifying times/placements may be invited to swim in special meets such as the Coaches Invitational Long Course Meet, and the MCSL All-Star Relays and Individual All-Stars Meets.
Every
family on the team is a voting member of the Rockville Rays Parents Association
that exists solely to support the swim program.
The success of the summer swim program is dependent upon having many
active volunteers. Parents are needed to officiate during the meets, which
requires being certified*. (Training
dates are listed on the calendar.) In
addition, there are social events, newsletters, bulletin boards, and swim
paraphernalia to coordinate. The Parents
Association also staffs a snack bar for several big events during the
summer. The revenue generated from these
activities help to keep our registration fees down and reduce out of pocket
payment for other team activities. Please don’t wait to be asked; be an active
volunteer. (*Please note: Certification
as an official is only good for two seasons.
If you did not attend training in 2008, you need to be recertified)
Practices are every weekday (Monday – Friday) beginning
Tuesday, May 26 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. On
June 17, the practice times will change to 5:00 – 7:00 pm every weekday except
Wednesday. At the request of RMSC management, starting June 17, all swimmers
are asked to come to practice through the outdoor entrance and use the outdoor
shower facilities.
Team suits (Female Typhoon Butterfly Back, $32 and Male
Typhoon Splice Jammer, $24, from Finals) are available from Aardvark Swim and
Sport in
Attached is the registration form for 2009. Two fees are required to complete your
registration - one goes to the Parents Association to pay for team awards and
other expenses (checks only), and one to the City of
VERY IMPORTANT DATE!!
Our practice meet (Time Trials) is on June 13 (Saturday). Parents need to attend an important
informational parents’ meeting at 7:00 p.m. the day before after the party.
Everyone is needed to help run this meet.
This meet determines our swimmers’ initial ranking on the team. Please
note that only the swimmers who participate in the Time Trials will be selected
for the first dual A meet. If you know your swimmer(s) will be absent for a
meet (especially for A Divisional Relay Carnival on July 5), please let your
coach or Team Rep know as early as possible.
Please
remember that if you swam for another MCSL team last summer, you are no longer
required to apply to the MCSL Board of Directors for a transfer of teams.
As we note
every year, a significant part of our success has been due to our depth, our
ability to fill the lanes in all events.
We hope to see everyone back, and bring a friend. If you are new to the team, welcome! It’s going to be an exciting season. Have a
question? Check out our bulletin board
at the pool or www.rockvillerays.us
and subscribe in the upper right corner for updates.
